Design Verification — Introdution

Designing hardware is only half the battle—ensuring it works as intended is the real challenge.

1. Introduction to Design Verification

Imagine constructing a skyscraper. Before building, you need architectural blueprints. After building, you need inspections to ensure everything works—plumbing, electrical, structural integrity. In hardware design, design verification is like those inspections. It ensures that the digital logic (written in languages like Verilog or VHDL) behaves exactly as intended before it’s manufactured into silicon chips.

Design verification helps answer the critical question:

“Does this design correctly implement the intended functionality?”

Unlike validation (which asks “Are we building the right product?”), verification asks “Are we building the product right?”

Why is it Important?

A modern System-on-Chip (SoC) may take years to design and can cost millions of dollars to fabricate. A bug found after manufacturing could lead to:

  • Product recalls
  • Financial losses
  • Reputation damage

Intel’s famous Pentium FDIV bug in 1994 cost the company nearly $500 million because a floating-point division unit had a minor logic bug.

Hence, verifying the design early and thoroughly is critical.


2. Digital Design Lifecycle and Where Verification Fits In

To understand design verification, we must first understand the full flow of how a chip is created.

The Stages of Chip Design

  1. Specification
    This is the starting point. It defines what the chip should do: what features it must support, what its inputs/outputs are, performance goals, etc.

  2. Micro-architecture Design
    The specification is broken down into manageable blocks: ALUs, registers, memory interfaces, etc.

  3. RTL Design (Register Transfer Level)
    Designers write the chip’s logic using hardware description languages (HDLs) like Verilog or VHDL.

  4. Design Verification (our focus)
    Engineers write testbenches and simulations to ensure the RTL behaves as expected.

  5. Synthesis
    Converts RTL into a gate-level netlist — turning abstract logic into real logic gates.

  6. Place & Route (Physical Design)
    Physically lays out the logic gates on the chip.

  7. Fabrication
    The final design is sent to a semiconductor foundry to manufacture the chip.

  8. Post-Silicon Validation
    Once the chip is made, real-world tests are run on it using testing hardware.

Verification’s Role

If you catch a bug here (Stage 4), you can fix it quickly and cheaply. Catch it in Stage 8 (after fabrication), and it may cost millions to fix.

Let’s take an example of building a USB Controller Chip.

3. RTL Design vs. Design Verification

Example: Let’s say you wrote the following RTL in Verilog to implement a simple counter:

module counter(input clk, input rst, output reg [3:0] count);
  always @(posedge clk or posedge rst)
    if (rst)
      count <= 0;
    else
      count <= count + 1;
endmodule

Your verification code might look like:

initial begin
  rst = 1;
  #5 rst = 0;
  repeat (10) @(posedge clk);
  assert(count == 10);
end

This checks whether the counter increments correctly after reset.


4. Types of Verification (with Deep Explanations)

There are two main categories: Static and Dynamic.

Static Verification

These techniques do not require simulation.

Linting

  • Think of it like a grammar checker for code.
  • It catches bad coding practices, ambiguous expressions, unused variables, etc.
  • Example: Assigning a 5-bit value to a 4-bit wire, or missing reset signals.

Suppose you write:

reg [3:0] a;
reg [7:0] b;
assign b = a;  // Lint warning: width mismatch

Lint tools like Verilator or SpyGlass will warn about this mismatch — which may not cause simulation issues, but will fail in synthesis.

CDC (Clock Domain Crossing) Checks

  • Modern chips use multiple clocks.
  • A Clock Domain Crossing bug happens when data passes from one clock domain to another without synchronization, leading to metastability (unpredictable outputs).
  • CDC tools analyze signals and ensure synchronizers are present.

Let’s say you’re transferring data from a 50 MHz domain to a 200 MHz domain:

// in clk50 domain
always @(posedge clk50) out_signal <= in_signal;

If you sample out_signal in the 200 MHz domain without synchronization:

always @(posedge clk200) sampled <= out_signal;  // Can cause metastability

A CDC tool will flag this and suggest using a synchronizer:

reg sync1, sync2;
always @(posedge clk200) begin
  sync1 <= out_signal;
  sync2 <= sync1;
end

Formal Equivalence Checking

  • Ensures that the RTL code before and after synthesis behaves exactly the same.
  • This is important because synthesis tools may optimize logic — you must ensure functionality is preserved.

Let’s say you optimize this logic:

Before Synthesis:

assign y = (a & b) | (~a & c);

After Optimization:

assign y = (a ? b : c);

Formally, they are equivalent. Formal tools will mathematically prove this.

Dynamic Verification

These methods simulate or emulate the design.

Simulation-Based Verification

  • The design is loaded into a digital simulator.
  • A testbench applies inputs and checks outputs.
  • This is like unit testing in software development.

Given this simple multiplexer RTL:

assign y = sel ? a : b;

Simulation test:

a = 1; b = 0; sel = 0; #10;
assert(y == 0);

a = 1; b = 0; sel = 1; #10;
assert(y == 1);

Emulation / Acceleration

  • Emulation uses special hardware (FPGA-based) to run the design much faster than software simulators.
  • Acceleration uses hardware to speed up simulation but still requires interaction with a simulator.
  • Instead of waiting 10 minutes for simulation of Linux boot, emulation tools can boot Linux on your SoC design in under a minute using hardware.

Formal Verification

  • Uses mathematics to prove or disprove properties (called assertions).
  • Formal tools try all possible input combinations and analyze the behavior exhaustively.
  • It’s slow but powerful, especially for control logic and protocols.
assert property (@(posedge clk) ready |-> #1 valid);

The tool checks that whenever ready is high, valid must follow in the next cycle. If there’s any input that violates this, the tool will report it — no testbench needed.


5. What is a Testbench?

A testbench is a virtual lab setup that:

  • Applies inputs to the Design Under Test (DUT),
  • Observes its outputs,
  • And checks for correctness.

Testbench Structure

  1. Stimulus Generator – Generates test patterns or input signals.
  2. Driver – Applies these patterns to the DUT.
  3. Monitor – Watches the outputs.
  4. Checker/Scoreboard – Compares actual outputs to expected ones.
  5. Assertions – Defines rules the design must obey.
  6. Coverage Collector – Measures how much of the design has been tested.

Example: Simple Testbench for a Counter

  wire [3:0] count;

  // Instantiate DUT
  counter dut(.clk(clk), .rst(rst), .count(count));

  // Clock generation
  always #5 clk = ~clk;

  initial begin
    rst = 1; #10; rst = 0;

  end
endmodule

6. Verification Languages and Methodologies

SystemVerilog

  • Extension of Verilog.
  • Adds features like OOP, randomization, assertions.
  • Industry standard for verification.

UVM (Universal Verification Methodology)

  • A SystemVerilog-based framework.
  • Promotes modularity, reusability, and scalability.
  • Uses components like:
    • agent, driver, sequencer, monitor, scoreboard, environment, etc.

UVM Example:

In UVM, a stimulus sequence might look like:

class write_sequence extends uvm_sequence #(my_transaction);
  task body();
    `uvm_do_with(req, {req.addr == 32'hABCD_0000; req.data == 32'hDEADBEEF;})
  endtask
endclass

This sequence sends a transaction with specific address and data.


7. Functional and Code Coverage

Code Coverage

  • Measures how much of the RTL code has been exercised by your testbench.
    • Line coverage
    • Toggle coverage (has each bit gone from 0 to 1 and back?)
    • FSM (Finite State Machine) state coverage

Example:

if (mode == 2'b00)
  y = a + b;
else if (mode == 2'b01)
  y = a - b;
else
  y = 0;

If your testbench only tests mode=2'b00, then 66% of code is not covered. Tools will highlight this.

Functional Coverage

  • Measures whether functional scenarios have been tested.
  • For example:
    • Have you tested a read-modify-write on a register?
    • Have you tested all burst sizes in an AXI protocol?

Example:

covergroup cg;
  coverpoint op_mode {
    bins add = {0}; 
    bins sub = {1}; 
    bins mul = {2};
  }
endgroup

You’ll see a report like:

  • add: hit
  • sub: hit
  • mul: not hit

This guides you to write new tests for mul.


8. Assertions and Formal Methods

Assertions

  • Think of them as “rules” written in the code to check for bugs.
// Ensure that when 'req' is high, 'ack' must be high within 2 cycles.
assert property (@(posedge clk) req |-> #[1:2] ack);

Formal tools will prove or disprove this for all input combinations.

Formal Verification

  • Tools attempt to prove assertions for all possible inputs.
  • Useful for:
    • Deadlocks
    • Safety properties
    • Protocol correctness

9. Constrained Random Verification (CRV)

  • Problem: Hardcoding every test case is tedious and can miss corner cases.
  • Solution: Use randomized inputs with constraints to guide them.

Example:

Manual Test:

addr = 0; data = 0; // boring

CRV Test:

rand bit [7:0] addr;
constraint valid_range { addr inside {[0:255]}; addr % 2 == 0; }

You might get addr = 14, addr = 202, addr = 48 — all valid and unexpected values.


10. Regression Testing

  • As designs evolve, you want to re-run all existing tests to ensure no new bugs were introduced.
  • This is called a regression suite.
  • Can be run nightly or after every code change.

Tools:

  • Shell scripts, Jenkins pipelines, or Python orchestration.

Example:

You have 300 tests:

  • test_reset
  • test_write_read
  • test_axi_burst
  • test_illegal_access

A regression script runs all of them:

foreach t in tests/
  run_simulator $t > logs/$t.log

You track failures and maintain stability with every RTL change.


11. Advanced Topics in Verification

Portable Stimulus (PSS)

  • Write tests once, reuse them across:
    • Simulation
    • Emulation
    • FPGA prototyping

Write stimulus once:

action write_data {
  data: uint<32>;
  addr: uint<16>;
  exec body { ... }
}

Use this in simulation, emulation, or prototyping — no rewrite needed.

Emulation Platforms

  • Cadence Palladium, Synopsys ZeBu
  • Can run full operating systems on DUT in a few minutes.
  • Your test takes 3 hours in simulation. Load it on ZeBu. It runs in 5 minutes. You can now boot embedded Linux images for pre-silicon validation.

ML for Verification

  • ML models can:
    • Predict RTL modules likely to have bugs.
    • Learn which tests are most effective.
    • Generate better constrained-random scenarios.
    • ML model trained on past bug data predicts that the new memory_ctrl.v module has a high probability of having a corner-case bug → focus testing there.

12. Coverage Closure

Coverage closure means:

“We’ve tested all parts of the design sufficiently and reached our verification goals.”

Steps:

  • Measure coverage (code + functional).
  • Add tests to improve weak areas.
  • Tweak constraints or assertions.
  • Repeat until thresholds are met (typically >90%).

After running tests, you see:

  • Code coverage: 85%
  • Functional: 60%
  • Assertion hits: 70%

You now:

  • Add constraints to generate new scenarios
  • Add new test sequences
  • Improve coverage to 95%

13. Summary and Key Takeaways

Case Study 2: Therac-25 Radiation Therapy Machine (1985–1987)

Overview:

The Therac-25, a computer-controlled radiation therapy machine, was involved in at least six accidents where patients received massive overdoses of radiation, leading to severe injuries and deaths.

Technical Details:

  • The machine had multiple modes (e.g., electron beam, X-ray) controlled by software.
  • A race condition in the software allowed the machine to enter an incorrect state, delivering high doses of radiation without proper safety checks.
  • Unlike its predecessors, the Therac-25 relied heavily on software for safety interlocks, removing many hardware safeguards.

Impact:

  • At least six known accidents occurred between 1985 and 1987.
  • The incidents led to increased scrutiny of software reliability in medical devices and the development of more rigorous software engineering practices.

Verification Lesson:

This case underscores the dangers of relying solely on software for safety-critical functions without adequate testing and validation. It emphasizes the need for comprehensive verification, including both software and hardware components, especially in life-critical systems.

Case Study 3: Intel F00F Bug (1997)

Technical Details:

  • The instruction sequence F0 0F C7 C8 (hence the name “F00F”) exploited a flaw in the processor’s exception handling mechanism.
  • Executing this sequence would cause the CPU to enter a halted state, unresponsive to interrupts.

Impact:

  • The bug could be exploited by malicious software to cause denial-of-service attacks.
  • Operating system vendors released patches to prevent the execution of the offending instruction sequence.

Verification Lesson:

Case Study 4: Cisco Trust Anchor Vulnerability (2019)

Overview:

Researchers discovered a vulnerability in Cisco’s Trust Anchor module, a hardware root of trust used in various Cisco devices, allowing attackers to bypass secure boot protections.

Technical Details:

  • The flaw resided in the implementation of the Trust Anchor’s FPGA, which could be manipulated to disable secure boot functionality.
  • By altering the FPGA’s bitstream, attackers could prevent the system from detecting unauthorized firmware changes.

Impact:

  • The vulnerability affected a range of Cisco devices, posing significant security risks.

  • Meltdown: Allowed user-space applications to read kernel memory by exploiting out-of-order execution.
  • Spectre: Enabled attackers to trick programs into accessing arbitrary memory locations, leaking data through side channels.

  • The vulnerabilities affected a wide range of processors, including those from Intel, AMD, and ARM.
  • Mitigations required both hardware and software changes, leading to performance impacts and extensive industry efforts to patch systems.

Verification Lesson:
